A great first round for Street Fighter, the movie

Far from achieving unanimous critical acclaim, the new Street Fighter film nevertheless posted a box office opening significantly higher than those of previous adaptations. That wasn’t difficult, some will say.

Between overwhelming enthusiasm and total disappointment, both critics and the public seem very divided about the new Street Fighter film, released last October 14.

Street Fighter knocks out its ancestors

However, the film smashes the records at the box office of the previous live-action adaptations. According to BoxOfficeMojo figures, in its first weekend, Street Fighter thus grossed $31 million in the United States, whereas the 1994 piece of trash (with Van Damme) made $6 million over the same period, with a final run of $33 million in the USA. Not to even mention Street Fighter : the Legend of Chun-Li from 2010, which opened at $4.7 million and finished at $12.7 million... worldwide.

Even taking inflation into account, the new Street Fighter thus knocks out its ancestors. It remains to be seen whether the long-term numbers will be strong enough to justify a sequel.
