Japanese manufacturer Yamaha unveiled the R200A at the beginning of October, a stereo amplifier-tuner designed to democratize access to Hi-Fi. On the menu for this model with its distinctly neo-retro charm: Class AB amplification of 2 x 100 W, a DAB+ tuner, multipoint Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, and a Phono MM input. This versatile model is aimed at music lovers who want to combine traditional analog sources and wireless streaming. All this at a very attractive price, under 370 euros.
Heir to more than 70 years of acoustic know-how from the firm with the three tuning forks, the Yamaha R200A was developed with a clear objective: to offer an accessible, simple, and serious entry point into the world of Hi-Fi. Going against today’s sometimes complex connected amplifiers, this unit focuses on the essentials and pure musicality. For this purpose, it adopts the brand’s beloved vintage and timeless aesthetic, with a streamlined front panel featuring physical controls (large volume knob, rotary switches for bass/treble tone settings, speaker selection button) accompanied by a discreet monochrome display and a remote control.
Yamaha R200A, Class AB amplification 2 x 100 W and linear power supply
Under the hood, no Class D here; the Japanese engineers remain faithful to Class AB amplification with discrete components, backed by a robust linear power supply equipped with a large isolated transformer. The electronic architecture favors a low-impedance signal path and an optimized layout of circuits and ground connections in order to minimize background noise and interference. In addition, the chassis integrates a central aluminum beam connecting the front and rear panels, combined with a new heat sink. This mechanical reinforcement stiffens the whole structure to limit unwanted vibrations, thus ensuring firmer bass support and a precise stereo image.
In terms of figures, the amplification delivers 2 x 100 W into 8 ohms (from 40 Hz to 20 kHz, with 0.2% THD, total harmonic distortion) and a maximum power of 2 x 115 W into 4 ohms. To be fully clear on the subject, its high current capability allows it to deliver dynamic power of 125 W, 150 W, 165 W and 180 W per channel into 8, 6, 4 and 2 ohms respectively, enough to drive bookshelf or floorstanding speakers with ease. All this with an extended bandwidth of 10 Hz to 100 kHz (±3 dB) and a signal-to-noise ratio of 100 dB.
Yamaha R200A, from vinyl to Bluetooth 5.3 Multipoint
Although it does without wired digital inputs (no [abc]optical[/abc] or [abc]coaxial[/abc]), the Yamaha R200A nevertheless includes an internal Burr-Brown PCM5121 conversion chip. This is dedicated to handling the audio streams from its FM/AM and [abc]DAB+[/abc] radio tuner (40 presets) as well as its [abc]Bluetooth[/abc] 5.3 receiver. Compatible with SBC and AAC codecs, the latter benefits from multipoint functionality, particularly practical for keeping two devices (smartphones, tablets, or computers) paired simultaneously and easily switching from one to the other.
For wired sources, the rear panel groups four analog inputs: three stereo [abc]RCA[/abc] Line inputs (for an audio CD player, a network player, or an external DAC) and one dedicated MM Phono input (with GND grounding terminal) allowing a turntable to be connected directly. There is also a stereo RCA output, a dedicated subwoofer output ([abc]LFE[/abc]) for adding an active subwoofer, as well as a 6.35 mm Jack headphone output on the front.
Finally, installation flexibility is ensured by a double speaker terminal with A/B speaker selection, allowing four speakers to be powered in the same room (A+B depending on impedance) or two separate zones to be soundtracked.
Announced availability for December 2026, in black or silver finish. Indicative price: 369 euros.
