Projection specialist Xgimi clearly intends to shake up the ultra-short throw (UST) market with the announcement of its new Aura 3 series, whose Kickstarter campaign will launch on October 20. The brand is unveiling its first Ultra HD 4K ultra-short throw projectors at 120 Hz, combining an RGB triple-laser engine with highly ambitious technical goals.

The new range is built around two models sharing the same core visual technologies, the Aura 3 Pro and the flagship, the Aura 3 Max. The latter is designed for very large spaces with an announced light output of 5,700 lumens (this figure could be revised upward at the time of the IFA show). Boasting an ultra-short throw ratio of 0.163:1, the projector is capable of displaying a 120" (305 cm) diagonal image with a throw distance of barely 20 cm from the screen. Beyond its raw performance, Xgimi has focused on home integration with the Xgimi Wall app, turning the device into a true decorative digital canvas when it is not showing films.

Xgimi Aura 3 Max and Pro: Dynamic Dual Iris optics and controlled contrast The heart of the Aura 3 series lies in the unprecedented integration of an optical system called Dynamic Dual Iris. By combining a dynamic iris that adjusts in real time to the brightness of the scene with a second physical aperture, Xgimi promises deeper blacks and increased detail in low light. The manufacturer thus announces an impressive native contrast ratio reaching 8,000:1. Image processing is handled by the new X-Vision AI intelligent processor, notably managing Dynamic Tone Mapping to optimize color reproduction (claimed 110% of the BT2020 gamut).

Xgimi Aura 3 Max and Pro: HDMI 2.1, 4K at 120 Hz and cutting-edge gaming The real evolution brought by the Aura 3 Max concerns its handling of very high-frequency video streams for video games. Based on two DLPC 8545 controllers coupled with a 0.47" [abc]DMD[/abc] matrix, it stands out as one of the first UST [abc]DLP[/abc] projectors capable of natively handling [abc]Ultra HD[/abc] [abc]4K[/abc] at 120 Hz via its [abc]HDMI[/abc] 2.1 inputs. The most demanding gamers will even be able to push smoothness up to 240 Hz at 1,080p resolution with an announced input lag of 1 millisecond. Support for [abc]VRR[/abc], [abc]ALLM[/abc] and Dolby Vision Gaming is included.

Xgimi Aura 3 Max and Pro: Imax Enhanced, Google TV and Harman Kardon sound On the cinema side, the Aura 3 series checks all the boxes for premium [abc]HDR[/abc] formats with support for [abc]HDR Dolby Vision[/abc], [abc]HDR10+[/abc], [abc]Imax Enhanced[/abc] as well as the classic [abc]HDR10[/abc] and [abc]HDR HLG[/abc]. Respect for the work is ensured by the presence of Filmmaker Mode and native compatibility with 24, 25 and 50 frames per second. Good news for 3D fans, stereoscopic 3D is included, along with two pairs of active glasses included in the box. Hardware anti-RBE technology is also built in to reduce the [abc]rainbow effect[/abc] in both 2D and 3D. The connected experience is powered by Google TV with certified Netflix, while sound output is provided by a powerful 80 W Harman Kardon system, compatible with [abc]Dolby Atmos[/abc] and DTS Virtual:X.
