5-layer OLED screens-: how does LG Display plan to revolutionize Apple’s future iMacs and our TVs?

South Korean manufacturer LG Display is pushing the limits of display technology with the unprecedented development of an OLED panel made up of five layers of emitters. Initially designed to meet Apple’s requirements, this promising innovation, combining extreme brightness and increased longevity, could eventually establish itself in the premium television market as well.-

LG Display is reportedly developing five-layer OLED screens for the first time, for future Apple iMacs but also for new, even more advanced televisions.

 

5-layer OLED panels: a major evolution compared with Tandem WOLED

According to information gathered by the Korean media outlet The Elec, LG Display is developing, for the first time, OLED screens with five emitter layers, compared with the four layers of its most advanced Tandem WOLED panels to date, used for example in the LG G6 TV series and the Philips OLED911.

 

Brightness and durability up for future 2029 iMacs

This new technology is said to have been ordered by Apple for its very first [abc]Oled[/abc] iMacs scheduled for 2029, but it would also presumably be used in televisions. This fifth layer would offer greater brightness and better durability, in exchange for higher production costs.

 

The race for layers against Samsung Display's Penta Tandem 

It is amusing to note that on one hand LG Display is trying to remove layers (from three to just two, cf. our news item LG Display dual-layer OLED panels: more affordable and less power-hungry, without loss of quality) to lower prices, and on the other to add them to improve quality. Note finally that five layers are nothing new, since Samsung Display has already been in the field since 2024 with Penta Tandem QD OLED.
