PlayStation 6 (PS6): why is Sony postponing the announcement of its release date?

If the arrival of a replacement for the PlayStation 5 is no longer in doubt, Sony's timetable remains at the very least unclear. Hit by the surge in the cost of electronic components, the Japanese manufacturer itself admits to navigating by sight as to the launch window for its highly anticipated PS6.

&At the time of a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki took a closer look at the thorny PlayStation 6 issue. The executive notably mentioned the major difficulties linked to the vertiginous rise in the price of memory components, a crisis that has severely hurt the entire electronics industry for many months.

PlayStation 6, concern over the price

If the company is doing well, notably thanks to temporary discounts on the aggressive U.S. customs tariffs, it still had to raise the selling price of the PlayStation 5. So if Sony cannot guarantee a fair price for the current machine, there is certainly cause for concern about the PS6, whose advanced features will make it even more expensive.

PlayStation 6, a delayed release?

And that is certainly why the console will not be coming out anytime soon. If rumors pointed to 2027, then 2028, Totoki (at the helm of PlayStation for a short time after Jim Ryan's departure in 2024) says that no launch date has yet been confirmed internally.

Waiting for RAMmageddon to end

The company is certainly waiting for "RAMmageddon" to calm down before releasing its new machine in a more serene market.
