MartinLogan Depth 212: premium subwoofer with dual 30 cm woofer and 1,100 W

The prestigious American manufacturer MartinLogan, founded in 1979 in Lawrence, Kansas (by Gayle Martin Sanders and Ron Logan Sutherland, hence the name MartinLogan), is relaunching its legendary Depth series with two new models, the Depth 212 and Depth 215. Presentation of the first one before returning to the second in a later news item.

Designed to integrate with perfect versatility and temporal coherence into premium [abc]Hi-Fi[/abc] installations as well as Home Cinema setups, the new Depth 212 subwoofer adopts the exclusive BalancedForce technology. Specifically, the subwoofer incorporates two active 12" (30.48 cm) [abc]woofers[/abc] arranged to operate in perfect opposition. This configuration mechanically cancels the forces generated by the drivers, guaranteeing an almost complete absence of cabinet vibrations (whose thickness varies from 1" to 3") and extremely low distortion.

MartinLogan Depth 212: Carbon Aerocore diaphragm and 64-bit DSP

To obtain bass of extremely high speed, capable of keeping up with Hi-Fi speakers without ever weighing them down, the engineers developed drivers equipped with a specific tri-layer diaphragm called Carbon Aerocore. This combines an ultra-rigid outer layer of carbon fiber, a very light intermediate PMI foam core (polymethacrylimide, a very high-tech synthetic polymer that comes in the form of a rigid foam used to create so-called “sandwich structure” composite materials), and an internal damping fiberglass layer. The whole system is driven by a Class D amplifier delivering 1,100 W RMS (2,200 W peak), allowing it to go down to 18 Hz (±3 dB). Signal processing is handled by a powerful [abc]DSP[/abc] Vojtko 64-bit (500 MHz) managing the highly sophisticated ARC Genesis acoustic correction (microphone included) to adapt perfectly to your room.

MartinLogan Depth 212: streamlined design, thermal dissipation and connectivity As you can see, MartinLogan has taken particular care with the aesthetics of the Depth 212 by completely hiding the amplification at the rear of the cabinet to adopt a convection cooling system via extruded aluminum profiles. Another design subtlety: the front panel fitted with the brand's backlit logo can be removed to reveal a hidden touch interface, allowing adjustments to be made without using the MartinLogan Control mobile app.

On the connectivity side, hidden underneath the subwoofer, the Depth 212 is generously equipped with RCA[/abc], [abc]XLR[/abc], high-level inputs, as well as an integrated wireless receiver (transmitter included).

Availability announced for the end of August, in Gloss Black finish (lacquered black). Indicative price: 7,260 euros.
