Already the undisputed leader in the [abc]SVOD[/abc] market, Netflix is expected to widen its lead even further over the next decade. According to forecasts by the firm Omdia, the American platform is poised to surpass 400 million subscribers by 2031 and to gather more than one billion regular viewers, establishing itself as the dominant player in a rapidly consolidating industry, with its only real rival being the behemoth YouTube.
According to a recent report by the market research and analysis firm Omdia, Netflix's subscriber base is expected to reach nearly 400 million worldwide by 2031, compared to 325 million today. A new era of profitability and consolidation: The platform will thus further widen the gap with its competitors, reinforcing its position as the undisputed leader in the subscription video streaming market. "The streaming industry is entering a new era where scale, profitability, and audience reach matter more than ever," explains Maria Rua Aguete of Omdia. "Consolidation will create stronger competitors, but Netflix remains ideally positioned to capitalize on global growth opportunities." One billion viewers, but YouTube remains untouchable. Omdia adds that Netflix's audience will surpass one billion viewers by 2027, a milestone few media giants have reached. It should be noted, however, that YouTube will remain far ahead, with nearly 3 billion viewers. "The biggest battle in the industry is no longer simply between streaming platforms," adds Rua Aguete. "Netflix is winning the subscription streaming war, but YouTube is becoming one of the most powerful forces in television by adding more premium content to its platform."
