AI is "a fucking genius," Gareth Edwards (Star Wars Rogue One)

Known for Star Wars Rogue One and Jurassic World Rebirth, Gareth Edwards is the latest director to join the list of "AI pro-" filmmakers.
While AI allows cinema to achieve feats that flirt with the boundaries of morality, many great directors (James Cameron or Ridley Scott) have already embraced it, considering it an inevitable creative tool. Joining their ranks, Gareth Edwards (Star Wars Rogue One) addressed the topic at a recent Amazon event in California. "I don't see any reason not to be interested in it as a filmmaker," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "It's clearly a tool that could be as important as the camera. It's going to be better than digital special effects." AI, a billionaire on acid? The director is, of course, referring to AI as a pre-production tool: "It's useful mainly for iterating and discovering what the film should be, and then, once you know what it is, you can go ahead and start making your film. But not for truly creating: It has absolutely no taste." He's a fucking genius to help you out. I see it as having a second-unit director who's a billionaire on acid. Like, he'll do whatever you ask, no problem. Sometimes he goes completely off the rails. But it's worth it." He does, however, mention the uncertainty about the coming years: "We have absolutely no idea where it's going to go," Edwards explains. "I think anyone who claims to know exactly what's going to happen over the next five years is simply a liar."
