Amazon MGM Studios strongly reaffirms its support for theatrical distribution

Amazon MGM Studios made a strong statement during its major presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, vigorously reaffirming its commitment to theatrical releases.
This policy from a platform is all the more welcome given that other streaming and tech giants, like Netflix and Apple, remain very hesitant on the subject. Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, couldn't resist taking a dig at the competition, declaring: "While some of our competitors occasionally dip their toes into the theatrical market, for us, it's neither a test nor an experiment." He added that the company's commitment to releasing fifteen films a year in theaters was "on track" and that it aimed to "create films that give audiences a reason to leave their homes." The star of "The Last Resort," Ryan Gosling, as well as directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, were present to thank theater owners for the success of the Amazon film, whose theatrical run has been extended.

Being worthy of the Bond legacy

Courtenay Valenti, head of film at Amazon MGM Studios, also discussed the James Bond franchise, and more specifically the casting of the lead role.

“Don't get too carried away. Know that we are taking the time to do things carefully and with deep respect. It's a lifelong dream for all of us to bring this new chapter to the public, and it's a responsibility we don't take lightly.”

And she continued: “What I can tell you is this: when you combine one of the most iconic franchises in history with a top-tier team of filmmakers, including the brilliant director Denis Villeneuve, the exceptional producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman, executive producer Tanya Lapointe, and screenwriter Steven Knight, you're preparing something that will truly be worthy of the Bond legacy.” This film is coming, and when the time comes, we'll have much more to share. Even without reading between the lines, it's clear that the next James Bond film will be released in theaters before any other form of Amazon-branded distribution.
