The technology that could revolutionize the smartphone within 10 years

Co-founder of One Plus and creator of Nothing, Carl Pei doesn't want to use AI to revolutionize the world, but to revolutionize the smartphone.

In an interview with Wired, Carl Pei gave his opinion on the future of artificial intelligence and the smartphone. Pei is well-placed to express an opinion on this subject, notably co-founder of One Plus and creator of Nothing, which manufactures devices with unique designs (see photo above).

According to him, the biggest players in the market - Apple in particular - have grown so much that they have lost the creativity of the beginnings, giving a chance to smaller companies - like Nothing - to leave a lasting mark on the industry.

"Our strategy is not to make grand declarations that AI will change the world and revolutionize smartphones," explains Pei about AI. "For us, it's about using it to solve real-life consumer problems, not to tell a great story. We want the product to be the story." And he adds that the smartphone will be the most important vector for AI, more than smart glasses.

He even sees a future where apps will disappear in favor of a single application: the device's operating system, which will become so intelligent that it will know your needs and bring them together in one place. "Currently, you have to go through a step-by-step process to determine what you want to do yourself, then unlock your smartphone and complete each step one by one," explains Pei. "In the future, your phone will suggest what you want to do and do it automatically for you. It will therefore be "agentic," automated and proactive."

However, since consumers love apps, he estimates that it will take 7 to 10 years for such a major change to affect the industry. Not such a long period, in our opinion, for such a radical shift, even if we are curious to see what it will look like.
