Xbox portable, (temporary) change of priorities

Microsoft is putting the portable Xbox console project on hold to focus on another portable Xbox project, which will be released this year. Here's what we're explaining.

A quick reminder of the situation if you missed the previous episodes. Microsoft is reportedly preparing (at least) two portable Xbox consoles: a completely original model that wouldn't arrive before 2027, another "easier" to develop, a sort of pocket PC (like Asus Rog or Steam Deck) made in collaboration with Asus but branded Xbox and equipped with all the official Xbox support, which would be released before the end of the current year.

Xbox, priority in 2025 to Windows 11££££

According to the latest indiscretions collected by Jez Corden of Windows Central, the native console project is currently on hold. Microsoft's priority is now given to the Asus version. The aim of the maneuver is to improve the video game performance of Windows 11 (the system under which the machine will run) in order to properly face the threat posed by the Steam Deck and its Steam OS.

The "real" portable Xbox console would still be on the calendar at the time of writing, even if Microsoft has refocused its efforts on the project whose release is most imminent, in order to meet the demands of players.
