AI at Disney is finished (for now)

OpenAI is shutting down Sora, its artificial intelligence video generator, thereby cancelling a $1 billion deal signed with Disney late last year.
While AI-generated video is booming, one of its most popular players—OpenAI and its Sora system—is withdrawing from the race, presumably to adjust its strategy and allocate its resources to more concrete subjects like robotics (and military applications?). Incidentally, this withdrawal also marks the end of a partnership between OpenAI and Disney: the House of Mouse had announced in December 2025 a $1 billion investment in OpenAI, granting Sora, which no longer exists, a license for 200 of its characters. Sora won't know… Content generated in this way would also have been selected by Disney and broadcast on the Disney+ platform. A calamity that we have thus escaped for the time being, even if the company will certainly find another partner to pursue this terrifying project. "As the nascent field of artificial intelligence progresses rapidly, we respect OpenAI's decision to withdraw from the video generation sector and refocus its priorities elsewhere," said a Disney spokesperson. "We value the constructive collaboration between our teams and all that we have gained from it, and we will continue to work with AI platforms to find new ways to meet fans where they are, while responsibly adopting new technologies that respect intellectual property and creators' rights."
