iPhone Air: Sales were ultimately solid according to Ookla, well beyond expectations

While it was thought that the new ultra-thin iPhone hadn't found its audience, new estimates published by Ookla reveal a much stronger start than expected.
The "fourth" iPhone in previous generations never truly achieved the success of other models: the iPhone Mini and iPhone Plus had limited lifespans before being replaced. The latest attempt, the iPhone Air, seemed destined for a similar fate, but recent figures offer a glimmer of hope. Ookla's estimates show a better-than-expected start, surpassing the iPhone 16 Plus. The latest estimates come from Ookla, the company behind Speedtest, a free app that measures internet connection speed. Based on Speedtest usage figures, Ookla estimated the market share of the latest iPhones in the fourth quarter of 2025. It appears that the iPhone Air represents 6.8% of the latest iPhones sold in the US. A seemingly small figure, but significantly higher than the 2.9% of the equivalent model, the iPhone 16 Plus, the previous year. And in other countries, particularly in Asia, the result is even better: 11.2% in Korea, 8.9% in Japan, and 8.4% in Singapore. This gives hope for an iPhone Air 2, which is expected to arrive in March 2027.
