$3.9 million, or nearly so, for the very first illustration that introduced Star Wars to the public, before the original film was released in May 1977…
Heritage Auctions recently sold a Star Wars poster for a staggering $3.875 million. Original artwork for the promotion of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. A unique feature of this piece is that it is an original reproduction of the very first illustration used to promote the original Star Wars film, Episode IV - A New Hope, released in May 1977. Created with acrylics and a paint sprayer by artist Tom Jung, the artwork initially appeared as an advertisement in American newspapers two weeks before the film's release. Charles Epting, Director of Pop Culture and Historical Art Auctions, has the floor: “For most Americans, this was their first glimpse of that galaxy far, far away,” said Charles Epting, Director of Pop Culture and Historical Art Auctions at Heritage Auctions. “The artwork is not just a movie collectible, but also a cultural artifact and a piece of American history. The emotional connection people have with the Star Wars films also helps explain the sale price.”
