Tom Cruise finally received an Oscar, it was about time!

Tom Cruise received an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards held last night in Los Angeles. The award was presented to him by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, with whom Cruise recently filmed a movie expected for release this fall.
This lifetime achievement award marks the first official Oscar the actor and producer has won in his long Hollywood career. He had already been nominated three times for acting—Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia—as well as for Best Picture as a producer for Top Gun: Maverick. And it's pretty unthinkable that he hasn't already won an Oscar for Magnolia. Tom Cruise, cinema is his life. Accepting the award, Cruise delivered an emotional speech, paying tribute to cinema, to those who work in it, and to those who love it: "Cinema takes me to the four corners of the world. It helps me appreciate and respect differences. It also shows me our shared humanity, how much we are alike in so many ways." And no matter where you come from, in a theater, you laugh together, you feel together, you hope together, and that's the power of this art. And that's why it matters, that's why it matters to me. So making movies isn't what I do, it's who I am." Also receiving honorary Oscars were choreographer Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas, while Dolly Parton received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Cruise and Allen were also seen dancing Saturday night, and the actor devoted nearly a minute of his acceptance speech to praising Debbie Allen and the importance of her work. Some will say there's something fishy going on, a line we won't cross.
