AV2 compression codec, it's coming

Video, especially Ultra HD, takes up a lot of space and consumes significant bandwidth for streaming, hence the need for ever more efficient compression technology.

The Alliance for Open Media (AOM) recently announced the arrival of AV2, the second version of the AV1 compression codec launched in 2018, for the end of this year.

AV2, the successor to AV1

[abc]AV1[/abc] offers superior performance to its competitor [abc]HEVC[/abc], even though the latter remains the dominant codec for [abc]4K[/abc] and [abc]HDR[/abc] content, despite the adoption of AV1 by Netflix and YouTube on some of their streams. As a reminder, the AOM includes major industry players such as Amazon, AMD, Apple, Disney, Google, Intel, LG, Meta, Microsoft, nVidia, and Samsung. AV2 is naturally designed to be more efficient than its predecessor and should be gradually adopted by [abc]OTT[/abc] services. An internal AOM survey of its members revealed that 53% planned to support AV2 within 12 months of its launch, and 88% within 24 months of its launch.

AOMedia Speaks££££

“AV2, a generational advancement in open video coding and the answer to the growing demand for streaming worldwide, delivers significantly higher compression performance than AV1,” AOMedia announced. “AV2 offers improved support for AR/VR applications, split-screen streaming of multiple programs, better screen content management, and the ability to operate across a wider range of visual quality. AV2 is a significant milestone on the path to an open and innovative future of media experiences.”
