Why did Netflix choose France?

Netflix explains why France, and more specifically the TF1 channel, was chosen for an experiment in broadcasting local programs.

As you probably know, all the linear channels of the French audiovisual group TF1 will be available from summer 2026 on the American streaming platform Netflix. A unique agreement for the moment, which could be extended to the rest of the world according to Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters.

On the occasion of the announcement of the platform's latest quarterly results, Peters explained why France and TF1 were chosen for this experiment in live and on-demand broadcasting: "We know each other very well. We wanted our first partner to be in a large territory. We wanted to choose the main local player. We wanted to be very aligned on the agreement, the form of the partnership and the values that we believed we could mutually generate by working together for our clients. According to Peters, the goal of the partnership is to expand Netflix's offerings in a particular country, offering more content, variety, and quality. You'd think that with 200 billion hours of content, we'd have enough to satisfy every person on the planet, continues Greg Peters. But the reality is, we're constantly hearing from our subscribers that they want even more. He continues, "As you've seen with our licensing and production activities... this is an accelerated way of meeting that need. So we're looking forward to seeing what consumers think. You never really know until you're on the ground and get the real-life reactions. And obviously, we'll factor that into our plans going forward."
