First 8K/120Hz monitor this year?

Until now limited to 60 Hz, Ultra HD 8K screens could see their native refresh rate doubled by the end of the year.

At the SID Display Week 2025 trade show in California last May, the Chinese manufacturer BOE announced that the first 32" [abc]Ultra HD[/abc] [abc]8K[/abc] 120 Hz LCD monitor could be ready before the end of the year.

As a reminder, the very first 8K monitor was launched by Dell in 2017, but it was limited to 60 Hz, a refresh rate that can affect image quality in the event of rapid movements on the screen. Samsung and TCL have already mentioned the arrival of [abc]LCD[/abc] and [abc]Oled[/abc] screens compatible with 120 Hz, but nothing has been released yet, which would make BOE's model the first of its kind.

"China's BOE is now the world's largest panel maker. On its stand was a very attractive 31.5" 8K LCD monitor panel. It supports a refresh rate of up to 120Hz in 8K or can run at 240Hz in 4K, the 8K Association wrote. The company told us it expects mass production later this year."

As a reminder, BOE only manufactures panels and market availability will depend on the monitor brand - Asus, Dell, LG, Samsung or others - that procures these panels. Initially, such a monitor will likely be used for professional purposes, in cinema or special effects. Later, we can hope to see this type of LCD panel appearing in televisions, for example for ever more advanced gaming performance.
