At the top of his development pipeline, McQuarrie confirms that the highly anticipated sequel to Top Gun: Maverick is indeed in the works. Alongside screenwriter Ehren Kruger, he quickly came up with the concept for the film, which is now in active development.
"The idea is already there. It wasn't difficult, even though I thought it would be. Ehren Kruger came up with a solid structure, so we have a clear foundation. The hardest part isn't the action or the scale, but the emotion. And that's exactly what I still have to work on." As for the possibility of directing the film himself if Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is unavailable, McQuarrie isn't ruling any doors: "I've studied a lot about how to make a movie in the spirit of Tony Scott. And I'm not one to hesitate to make a sequel to one of his movies."

The filmmaker also returned to a film idea that has never been realized to date, which would have brought together Superman (played by Henry Cavill) and Green Lantern. "Green Lantern was the one I was offered. He's a difficult character to approach, particularly because of his powers. But I found a solution: to give him a weakness. His ring has limited autonomy, which can become problematic at the worst moment. It made the story more captivating. Henry also had his own vision, and I saw how Superman and Green Lantern shared certain characteristics. It paved the way for an exciting conflict and a conclusion that expanded their shared universe."
He also mentioned a memorable opening sequence, which would have laid the foundation for a more intimate and human Superman: "The first five minutes were without dialogue. A sequence that allowed us to understand what motivates Superman, what he fears, and the reasons for his choices. It would have been epic. Superman is hope, inspiration, and the joy he brings."
Between the Top Gun universe, DC superheroes, and the explosive conclusion of Mission: Impossible, Christopher McQuarrie demonstrates a creative ambition on par with that of his accomplice Tom Cruise. Something to watch very closely.
