Helldivers 2 on PS5, “democracy” at the end of the barrel

Decades after its release, the film Starship Troopers by Paul Verhoeven continues to influence video game works, and not the least interesting ones.

Developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Helldivers 2 is a cooperative “third person” shooter (your character is visible, unlike the subjective view) that the AVcesar editorial team strongly recommends. Four players can embark on the online adventure and it is also recommended to take part in a team to get the most out of it.

Helldivers 2, the mission: kill them all!££££

Scenario side, the classic Starship Troopers has been there, since you are in the shoes of an elite soldier from the future whose mission is “to bring peace, freedom, and democracy”. In other words, destroy a race of extra-terrestrial insects - the Terminids - until there are none left. And to respect diversity, there will also be Automatons to eliminate, i.e. crazy robots who have no other idea than to eliminate humans.

Helldivers 2, zoom on the gameplay££££

Nothing new really, but when it's done well, why complain? Without forgetting the good layer of cynicism specific to Verhoeven's work (and the book on which it is inspired), the propaganda having definitively brainwashed your hierarchy and your campaign comrades. The missions offer several objectives, most of the time involving the destruction of your enemies and their structures. Strategy is essential since each opponent has a particular tactic, and the location of the damage must be managed. For example, injured legs will limit your movements, or an affected arm will make shooting and reloading more difficult. Also note, it is possible to suffer from friendly fire, so communication between teammates is essential to avoid ending up destroyed by the shot of a brother in arms.

Huge arsenal to unlock throughout the missions££££

Successful missions are rewarded and many weapons can be purchased, from a simple laser rifle to a nuclear air strike. The games follow each other and are not alike thanks to this evolving equipment and moreover, for each objective there is always associated the motivation to unlock a new arsenal. In short, an end-to-end success that lets off steam and deserves the attention of genre-sensitive players.
