In the 90s, David People (Blade Runner, Merciless) and his wife Janet wrote a variation on Chris Marker's short film, The Pier, for Universal. The project will be entrusted to director Terry Gilliam who will release Army of the 12 Monkeys in 1995, not without the help of a certain Bruce Willis who would also have the spotlight stolen a little by Brad Pitt, an actor in become at the time, who obtained his first Oscar nomination with this role.
A premonitory epidemic?
The story of the film, quite premonitory, it must be admitted, plunges us into the year 2035. The surface of the Earth has become unlivable for humanity since a deadly virus of unknown origin eradicated 5 billion of humans forty years earlier. James Cole (Bruce Willis) is chosen to be sent to the year 1996 to gather information on the mysterious "Army of the Twelve Monkeys", likely responsible for the epidemic.
The Army of the 12 Monkeys, 4K release 30 years later
Almost thirty years after its release, the film will be released on November 7 in simple 4K or 4K Ultra HD/Blu-Ray Collector's box (VO/VF DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1) limited to 1,000 copies (visual here -below). A format which will undoubtedly do justice to the fantastic work of the director of Brazil (and its production designer, who had to deal with a fairly small budget at the time for this type of production). In exchange and unlike Brazil (at least for the US version), Terry Gilliam obtained the final cut for the film. Which, for the ex-Monty Python, changes a lot of things…
