Among the most watched videos on the essential YouTube, music videos have always been at the top of the rankings, this content having been a huge growth engine for the platform.

But the dominance of these videos has lately been challenged by unexpected rivals: nursery rhymes and educational videos for children. In the Top 20 as of August 2023, illustrated by the Visual Capitalist site (image below), this children's content occupies nine places, showing their vital importance for the health of the platform. In the very first position is the haunting (not to say horrifying) song Baby Shark, launched in 2016 by the Korean educational brand Pinkfong.
Baby Shark was the first music video to exceed 10 billion views (in January 2021), positioning itself ahead of Despacito (former first in the ranking) with nearly 5 billion views in advance.
