Smartphone market plummeting in 2022

Last year was gloomy for the global smartphone market, with an 11% drop in distribution compared to 2021.

According to the latest figures from Canalys, the fourth quarter of 2022 saw a 17% drop in global smartphone distribution compared to the same period in 2021.

Top 5 smartphone market 4th quarter 2022

Over the full year, total distribution will have been 1.2 billion units, i.e. 11% less than in 2021. For comparison, 2021 had seen a mini growth of 1% compared to 2020. In the 4th quarter of 2022, Apple regained its leading position with a market share of 25%, despite difficulties on its production lines in Zhengzou, and sluggish demand. Samsung finished second with a 20% market share, but remained first for the year as a whole. Xiaomi is third over the last quarter with an 11% market share, and Oppo and Vivo complete the Top 5 with 10% and 8% respectively. The table above lists the market shares of the Top 5 brands for the whole of 2022.

Canalys expects marginal growth for 2023, with economic conditions that will remain adverse.
