Apple 1 auction: a rare 1976 example soars to more than 1.1 million dollars

A rare working example of the very first computer from the Apple brand, an Apple 1 from 1976 sold with an autograph letter from Steve Jobs, smashed estimates during an auction organized by Bonhams, reaching more than 1.1 million dollars.

Apple’s historic products continue to turn collectors’ heads, this time with a rare example of the Apple 1, the very first computer designed by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1976. Initially estimated between €500,000 and €800,000 by the Bonhams auction house, it ultimately sold for more than $1.1 million after a fierce battle between two bidders on October 14 last year.

The story of the “Hatfield” example

This Apple 1 example is nicknamed “Hatfield,” in reference to its original owner Fred Hatfield, who had complained to Apple about the lack of software for the computer. Steve Jobs had then replied by letter, offering an exchange with the new Apple II at a preferential price. This legendary response is part of the lot up for sale, contributing to its astronomical price.
