PlayStation: Is the boycott against all-digital forcing Sony to back down?

Following the controversial announcement of the switch to all-digital for PlayStation at the start of 2028, the grumbling is still just as strong among players. A protest that, however, seems to come from a noisy minority, not numerous enough to make the manufacturer Sony back down.

You already know that, starting at the beginning of 2028, PlayStation will stop selling games in [abc]Blu-Ray[/abc] format to move to all-digital.

A digital boycott without impact

Unhappy with this decision, some players even went so far as to organize a “digital boycott,” stopping purchasing any digital content on the PlayStation Store for a week. Enough to make Sony buckle? Alas no, reveals analyst Mat Piscatella of the Circana firm, who, after sharing data on player engagement levels, concludes that following this boycott, “there was no significant change, either in the number of players or in engagement, in our tracking data.”

General indifference and the Call of Duty effect If the most passionate fans are aware of the industry’s behind-the-scenes workings, the reality is that the majority of players are not informed, or simply don’t care. What’s more, this boycott took place while the beta test of the latest Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 was underway, so not necessarily the best time to urge gamers to keep their distance from their PlayStation.
