Nintendo: A sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. sells for $3 million

It dates back to 1986, and almost every child of that era received it for Christmas, yet this version of the Nintendo game Super Mario Bros. went to auction for a record sum.
Record-breaking auctions aren't limited to Star Wars collector's items. Seemingly innocuous video games are highly sought after and so rare that some are willing to spend millions of dollars to acquire them. Super Mario Bros., a new world record at $3 million. The latest example is the classic Super Mario Bros., released in 1985, which every Nintendo NES owner has possessed. A version of this title was recently sold by Heritage Auctions for a whopping three million dollars, breaking the record of 2 million set in 2021 for another Super Mario Bros. A 1986 Super Mario Bros. edition in its original packaging. Admittedly, this is a cartridge released in 1986, from the second production run, with a specific sticker on the box. But the most remarkable thing about this item is its condition: sealed and never used, as it was included in a pack with the console (which comes with the game, for the lucky buyer), itself also never opened. Exceptional condition for 40 years! In short, an object that hasn't seen the light of day for nearly 40 years, giving it a near-mint condition, confirmed by an independent organization and justifying this completely insane price for mere mortals like us. Who knows, take a look in your closets, bedrooms, or attics, a hidden treasure might be there…
