Is Spotify fighting AI music, or not?

The music streaming giant is introducing a new Spotify Verified label to identify legitimate tracks and combat, in its own way, the influx of AI-generated audio content.
At a time when 97% of listeners can no longer distinguish between music produced by humans and that generated by AI, music streaming platforms have an important role to play in helping their users navigate this landscape. A label to distinguish human artists from AI generators: Deezer led the way with an aggressive detection and removal policy, followed by Apple Music with a more cautious approach to labeling. A similar approach has been adopted by the giant Spotify, which recently unveiled the arrival of a "Verified by Spotify" badge that will be displayed on artists who comply with the platform's rules, have consistent listeners, and "an identifiable presence, both on and off the service." This is a way to distinguish real artists from fake ones, namely AI-generated music. “In the age of AI, it’s more important than ever to be able to trust the authenticity of the music you listen to,” explains Spotify. Spotify is focusing on verification rather than removal. However, this initiative also suggests that the platform is ready to accept AI-generated music, since it doesn’t mention removing it. “In today’s music landscape, the notion of artist authenticity is complex and rapidly evolving, and we will continue to evolve our approach over time,” Spotify states. In fact, if these seemingly inhuman tracks meet the aforementioned criteria, they too could obtain this new label.
