Dolby and BMW are turning the 7 Series into a rolling lounge…

Dolby Laboratories and BMW are taking another step forward in the race for premium interiors. With the arrival of Dolby Atmos in the new BMW 7 Series, the car ceases to be a simple means of transportation from point A to point B and becomes a fully-fledged entertainment space, designed for music, audiobooks, and certain video uses.
Presented at Auto China 2026, this alliance between Dolby Laboratories and BMW illustrates a profound reshuffling of the deck in the luxury automotive market. The battle is no longer fought solely on design or power, but on the quality of the in-car experience... Dolby Atmos transforms the 7 Series interior. By integrating Dolby Atmos technology into the new BMW 7 Series, the German manufacturer and Dolby Laboratories are working together to significantly enhance the in-car sound experience. The Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System becomes the vehicle for a fuller, more precise, and more immersive sound experience. The announced configuration features up to 36 high-performance speakers and 1,965 W of power, with Diamond Dome tweeters, speakers integrated into the headrests, and 3D channels housed in the roof. The German sedan no longer just sells comfort… it markets an atmosphere, almost a home soundstage. The car, a new medium in the era of in-car entertainment. What about the role of the automobile in a digital world where attention is constantly shifting towards screens and content platforms? BMW and Dolby Laboratories respond based on an observation that is now difficult to ignore: the vehicle is no longer perceived solely as a means of transportation but as a place for cultural and multimedia consumption. The study cited on the Chinese market also shows that in-car entertainment systems now carry more weight in the purchasing decision than some traditional criteria such as price or exterior design. Immersive sound is thus becoming a differentiating factor. The 7 Series, flagship of a wider rollout; The BMW 7 Series serves as the Munich-based manufacturer's flagship here. It inaugurates a rollout destined to extend to other models, including the BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase. This logic is far from anecdotal; it reflects the ambition to make Dolby Atmos a standard in BMWs, not just a premium option. Inside the cabin, the technology promises striking clarity, increased depth, and remarkable spatial precision. Auto China 2026, showcase of a global audio-video strategy; In Beijing, visitors will discover the system at the BMW stand. This staging is not insignificant; it inaugurates a broader offensive where the high-end automobile embraces the concept of the rolling lounge, while video and music services seek new avenues for growth. For Dolby, the challenge lies in imposing its sonic language on a global scale, which has always been the San Francisco company's strategy (see our audio-video devices in which Dolby is ubiquitous). For BMW, it's about consolidating a premium identity that is no longer limited to the road.
