Metal Gear Solid in cinemas: the end of a never-ending saga?

Directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the duo behind Final Destination: Bloodlines, have reportedly been chosen to direct the Metal Gear Solid adaptation.
Following the critical and commercial success of Final Destination: Bloodlines, the two filmmakers have reportedly landed a particularly prestigious project, while also signing a major first-look deal with Sony Pictures. Their new production company, Wonderlab, will develop films under this agreement, with the ambition of creating highly entertaining, commercial, character-driven works open to genre hybridization. Hideo Kojima, the creator of Metal Gear Solid: The first project stemming from this agreement is a film adaptation of the famous video game franchise created by Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear Solid. This would be the first time this license has been adapted for the big screen. To say the project is highly anticipated is almost an understatement: between rumors, aborted attempts, and false starts, the idea of a Metal Gear Solid film has been circulating for decades. The last notable attempt dates back more than ten years, when Jordan Vogt-Roberts, riding high on the success of Kong: Skull Island, was attached to the project. That version ultimately never materialized. Metal Gear Solid, an "ancestral" saga from 1998: At the crossroads of stealth films and science fiction, the saga began in 1998. The first game follows a mission to retake control of a secret military base that has fallen into the hands of genetically modified soldiers, holed up with hostages and equipped with a next-generation nuclear weapon. Since then, the franchise has spawned numerous installments and developed a rich and complex mythology, exploring several periods of the 20th century to enrich its narrative. This announcement is therefore sure to delight fans and could well mark, finally, the beginning of the end for this long-awaited project.
