Italy rejects Netflix price hikes
10.04.2026 • 10h59
Italian courts have declared Netflix subscription price increases illegal and have ordered that members be reimbursed.
While Netflix raised its prices twice in the United States within a year, a Roman court has ruled that the service's price increases in Italy are illegal. Price increases between 2017 and 2024 invalidated following a consumer complaint. More specifically, following a complaint from the consumer association Movimento Consumatori, the court ruled that Netflix's price increases between 2017 and 2024 are illegal in Italy because no legitimate reason was given to consumers to justify them. Netflix has three months to lower its prices and reimburse subscribers, for a total sum estimated at nearly €2 billion, otherwise the company will have to pay a fine of €700 per day. Netflix appeals… The streaming platform has naturally appealed this decision, stating: “At Netflix, our members come first. We take consumer rights very seriously, and we believe our terms have always complied with Italian law and practices.”
