Sony Bravia Theatre Sub 9, Sub 8 and Rear 9: Sony strengthens its Home Cinema arsenal

With the new Sony Bravia Theatre Sub 9 and Sony Bravia Theatre Sub 8 subwoofers, as well as the Sony Bravia Theatre Rear 9 surround speakers, Sony expands its Bravia Theatre range and focuses on a modular approach combining dual subwoofers and speakers with height channels. The goal: to recreate the richness of a true home cinema system, without a dedicated amplifier or complex installation.
Following the new Bravia Theatre Bar soundbars (see our news articles Sony Bravia Theatre Bar 7: Compact, Ambitious, and Home Cinema Ready and Sony Bravia Theatre Bar 5: 3.1 Soundbar for Immersive Sound), Sony completes its 2026 Home Cinema offering with three key components: the Bravia Theatre Sub 9 and Bravia Theatre Sub 8 subwoofers, and the Bravia Theatre Rear 9 surround speakers. These speakers can be used interchangeably with the Sony Bravia Bar 9, Sony Bravia Bar 8, and Sony Bravia Bar 7 soundbars. Note that the Sony Bravia Bar 7 is the only one to offer dual subwoofer support (see below).

Sony Bravia Theatre Sub 9: The premium subwoofer with dual opposing drivers

The most ambitious model in the range, the Bravia Theatre Sub-9 (SA-SW9) features a dual 200mm aluminum driver architecture, positioned in perfect opposition. The goal: to cancel unwanted vibrations, reduce distortion, and extend the ultra-low frequency response. Each driver has its own 300W amplifier, for a total claimed power of… 600 watts. The Sony Bravia Theatre Sub 9 can be installed in two orientations, and its two-part design gives it a distinctive visual identity.

Sony Bravia Theatre Sub 8: More compact, but still powerful! More accessible and easier to integrate, the Bravia Theatre Sub 8 (SA-SW8) features a single 200mm driver powered by a 300-watt module. It retains the essentials: deep bass, controlled impact, and dual orientation. At only 17mm deep, it's clearly aimed at setups where space is a critical factor. Two simultaneous subwoofers? It's possible with Sony! For the first time in the Bravia Theatre range, Sony allows you to pair two identical subwoofers (two Sub 8s, see photo on the left below, or two Sub 9s) with the same soundbar. A rare option in this segment, it allows for better bass distribution throughout the room, reduces hollow or overly emphasized areas, and creates a more immersive experience. This feature is available from launch with the Bravia Theatre Bar 7. The Bar 8 and Bar 9 will benefit from it via a later Firmware update. Sony Bravia Theatre Rear 9: Surrounds with Height Channel; To complete the immersive experience, Sony introduces the Bravia Theatre Rear 9 (SA-RS9, see photo on the right above), surround speakers with a particularly generous volume (286 × 154 mm). They feature a complete architecture: 80 mm aluminum woofer, passive radiator, 16 mm tweeter, plus an 80 mm upfiring driver for height effects. These drivers reflect sound off the ceiling to enhance the rear soundstage and improve the 360 Spatial Sound Mapping experience. But above all, they support the 3D sound effects of Dolby Atmos/DTS:X soundtracks. Specifically, the Sony Bravia Theatre Rear 9 speakers can be wall-mounted and rotated up to 60° to precisely direct the sound towards the listening area. Sony Bravia Theatre: a modular approach to evolving towards Home Cinema. With the Sony Bravia Theatre Sub 9, Sony Bravia Theatre Sub 8, and Sony Bravia Theatre Rear 9, Sony clarifies its intention: to offer an evolving system capable of competing with a traditional Home Cinema setup, but without the constraints of an audio-video amplifier or complex cabling.
