Bullitt Steven Spielberg/Bradley Cooper: things are looking grim!

Announced a long time ago, the Bullitt project seems increasingly to be somewhere between a pipe dream and a concrete construction site. Where exactly does it stand?
In 2022, it was announced that a new take on the character of San Francisco's uncompromising police officer, Frank Bullitt, was in development, with Steven Spielberg slated to direct. Bradley Cooper had reportedly agreed to star in the film. The project was not to be a remake of the 1968 cult thriller, Bullitt, starring Steve McQueen, but an original and untold story centered on the character. Josh Singer was announced as the screenwriter, while Cooper, Spielberg, and Kristie Macosko Krieger were to produce. In late 2023, Krieger provided an update, indicating that they hoped to receive the script soon. Things aren't looking good for Bullitt anymore. A little over two years later, World of Reel reports that rumors, which surfaced a few weeks ago, suggested that Spielberg or Cooper might withdraw from the project, with only one of them remaining involved. The site adds that it has contacted sources about the project's progress and can now "confidently state that the project is clearly on the back burner." Bradley Cooper is reportedly working on another "passion project" in the vein of Maestro, which he plans to direct later this year or in early 2027. Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg is in post-production on Disclosure Day and, according to the same source, while he hasn't yet finalized his next film, the new Bullitt is not among them. In short, things are looking very grim. What a shame.
