VOD/SVOD markets France 2022/2023, the figures

After our spotlight on the figures for physical video in France (see our news Physical video market France 2023, the figures), focus on the VOD/SVOD markets with the figures communicated during the conference UHD Partners which was held in Paris at the end of November.

First observation, the VOD/SVOD markets are doing better and better in France with turnover, depending on the category, almost all increasing (see second illustration below).

Nearly 9 million daily SVOD users in France in 2022

After making a strong comeback in the lives of the French in 2020 with a daily listening time of 3h58, on the occasion of the health crisis triggered by Covid-19 and the associated confinements, the audience of the television then decreased to settle at 3h40 in 2021 and 3h26 in 2022 to compare, for 2022 again, with a daily TV switching time of 4h16. This last value encompasses all possible activities with a television including VOD/SVOD. Ultimately, the number of daily SVOD users (users of at least one VOD/SVOD service) will reach 8.9 million in 2022.

As a reminder, as shown in the illustration below, the time spent in front of the big screen was 3h40 in 2019. This reflects a factually declining attendance of French consumers. However, given the number of mobile screens (smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc.) which has exploded over the period and the associated profound changes in French content consumption (access to streaming everywhere, all the time), the Sector specialists agree that daily television viewing time remains significant, even remarkable.

2023, VOD/SVOD is progressing but pay TV is resisting

First of all, we note that the overall turnover of VOD/SVOD is growing, year after year, to be established in 2022 (the figures for 2023 at the time of writing these lines are not yet known) at 1.834 billion euros. 'euros. This increase is to the detriment of pay television which ends 2022 with a turnover of 3.437 billion euros, compared to 3.494 billion in 2021. You can see this in the graph below, in five years, the turnover of VOD/ SVOD increased from 534 million euros to 1.834 billion. At the same time, the turnover of pay TV increased from 3.675 billion to 3.437 billion. In the end, if VOD/SVOD is gaining ground on pay TV, the latter is nevertheless holding up rather well and the overall turnover of paid access to content is increasing, still over five years (from 2018 to 2022), by 4.209 billion dinars. 'euros to 5.271 billion.

2023, zoom on the components of VOD/SVOD

Looking in more detail at the figures for the first half of 2023 for the VOD/SVOD categories alone, we note that their different segments are thriving, except for rental VOD which is relatively stable with 69.5 million euros generated compared to 74 million for the same period in 2022 and 65.4 million in 2021. For their part, VOD for purchase shows 41.3 million compared to 38.9 million in 2022 and 38.8 million in 2021. This is not a surprise , most of the growth is ensured by SVOD which occupies 90% of the turnover of the digital market and 83% of the turnover of the overall video market in France, that is to say by counting revenues from physical formats ( DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray)
