Smartphone market 2021, growth led by iPhone 13

Smartphone market revenue grew strongly last year, despite shortages of electronic components.

According to data from the firm Counterpoint Research, the turnover of the global smartphone market increased by 7% between 2020 and 2021, and even by 20% in the fourth quarter of 2021 compared to the same period the previous year.

Apple, 44% of the 2021 smartphone market turnover

Good performance, especially given the shortages of electronic components that have affected the mobile industry. The success of the iPhone 13 apparently has a lot to do with this growth. In the fourth quarter of 2021, Apple's turnover for the iPhone was thus 196 million dollars - the best quarter of all time for the brand - or 35% better than the same period in 2020. Thus Apple obtains 44% of the total turnover of smartphones this year.

Strong growth in 5G smartphones in 2021

The success of the iPhone 13 has also increased the average price of mobiles by 12% in the fourth quarter of 2021 compared to the fourth quarter of 2020. A price increase also helped by the proliferation of 5G smartphones, which account for more than 40% of total mobile distribution in 2021, compared to 18% in 2020.
