NVidia Shield Experience 9.0 update (Android 11): new GeForce Now 4K and 7.1 features

The Californian company nVidia offers yet another Firmware update for its nVidia Shield Android TV multimedia boxes, the Shield Experience 9.0. This is what we can call an exemplary follow-up since the launch of the first box of its kind, in 2015!

Remember, last August, we indicated in our columns that nVidia had decided to skip the Android 10 update for its Shield TV multimedia boxes (see our news Box nVidia Shield TV, not to Android 10 but development still in progress). It is therefore very logical that they will soon welcome, and directly, Firmware Shield Experience 9.0 based on Android 11 (but not Android 12) with many new features as a result.

Shield Experience 9.0, main new specifications

Among these, we can mention the new virtual keyboard GBoard signed by Google, the support of the APT-X protocol for the Bluetooth function, an option to disconnect the Bluetooth devices in standby, a support of the high resolution sound content, enhanced security options and integrated speech synthesis. We also note optimized power management to save energy, support for Stadia buttons for Xbox, PlayStation and Shield controllers.

Shield Experience 9.0, nVidia Shield TV exclusives

The Californian company nVidia took advantage of this update to point out that the Shield TV boxes are the only devices to support the streaming of GeForce Now games up to Ultra HD 4K HDR and 7.1 (limited to 1080p on Smart TV).

Finally, nVidia also focused on the arrival of new applications but also on the new possibilities of some on Shield TV, for example Apple TV with now support for Ultra HD 4K, HDR Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos) and Google Play Movies (with Ultra HD 4K support and HDR Dolby Vision).
