Last year, rumors announced the introduction of a completely new OLED technology for the iPhone XX, which will celebrate Apple's smartphone's 20th anniversary in 2027. A technology called Color Filter on Encapsulation (COE) that is however not yet sufficiently mature, and which Apple would ultimately only adopt in 2029 on the iPhone 22 Pro.
Increased brightness and longer battery life
This is what the UbiResearch firm reveals, specifying that this display will achieve even greater brightness for similar power consumption, or similar brightness with reduced power consumption. In detail, the COE process consists of a filter that reduces reflections and makes the polarizing layer obsolete. Such a display would therefore be thinner, would let more light through thanks to increased transparency, and would help increase battery life.
COE process, complex production challenges
Samsung was a pioneer on the subject with a version named Eco² Oled on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. As mentioned previously, COE still presents production challenges, with the absence of a polarizing layer requiring further complex adjustments to reduce distracting reflections. Some rumors claim that the new iPhone Duo already uses COE to some extent, even though Apple has confirmed nothing on the subject.
