In life, the two men are real buddies, and the idea of reuniting them on screen again had been floating around for a while. Judging by this first trailer, the result could be particularly delicious.
The self-referential aspect is total, the two pals are having the time of their lives, and the clips hint at constantly unbridled humor, where self-mockery and irony are pushed very far. It inevitably brings to mind The Studio at times, but the obvious chemistry between McConaughey and Harrelson brings something more spontaneous, almost uncontrollable, that already bodes very well for a future cult favorite.
Texas Brothers
The two actors play fictional versions of themselves, whose friendship is thrown into doubt when they discover a decades-old secret: they may actually be brothers. After the failure of his daughter’s marriage, Woody packs up his whole family and heads to Austin for an extended stay at Matthew’s ranch. But what was meant to be a break to heal old wounds quickly turns into chaos when Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac, played by Holland Taylor, lets slip a long-buried secret: the two friends may indeed be brothers. While Woody turns the ranch upside down to uncover the truth, Matthew has to deal with a crisis of identity of a very different kind, since he is considering running for governor of Texas.
Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan and Oona Yaffe round out the cast. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson will also serve as executive producers alongside showrunner Lee Eisenberg (The Office).
The series will launch on September 23 on Apple TV with two episodes, before airing weekly until November 4.
