Ultra HD 4K upscaling on PlayStation 5 is significantly improved with the new QSSR algorithm (Quick Spectral Super Resolution), a true little brother to the powerful PSSR, until now exclusive to the PlayStation 5 Pro.
&At the occasion of a recent update, Sony’s Playstation 5 is getting a much-anticipated new feature: QSSR. This new [abc]Upscaling[/abc] algorithm is presented as a lighter and optimized version of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), a hardware technology that until now was strictly reserved for its most expensive and powerful variant, the PlayStation 5 Pro.
PSSR 2.0 too demanding for the standard PS5
As a reminder, native [abc]Ultra HD[/abc] [abc]4K[/abc] games on consoles remain rare. To enjoy them on your suitable television, the system must use upscaling through specialized algorithms. The PlayStation 5 Pro handles this particularly well thanks to its architecture incorporating PSSR 2.0.
Quick Spectral Super Resolution to the rescue
Particularly resource-intensive, PSSR is not available for the base PS5. To make up for this lack, Sony recently introduced an adapted version, QSSR, also developed in collaboration with AMD in order to maximize performance on the older PS5 architecture. To take advantage of this new technology, games must be compatible from the outset, or updated. Already two titles, and not the least, have therefore been updated for this purpose, Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.

The QSSR feature is now available free of charge via a software update for the PlayStation 5 console. The feature is activated directly in the display menus of compatible games.
