Apple Vision Pro 2: an uncertain future and a release pushed back to 2029?

The future of the next version of the Apple Vision Pro is the subject of heated debate within the Cupertino company, to the point that the project is currently barely supported by management.

The team in charge of developing Apple Vision within Apple is currently working on “a completely redesigned headset,” reports Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Despite this effort, the project is no longer considered a priority. According to the information disclosed, it is even currently “on life support,” meaning kept alive in the sole hope of a hypothetical release at the end of 2028, or even early 2029.

Four concepts under study, including an external module

Apparently, four different concepts are being explored by engineers. Among them is a version in which most of the components would be moved to an external wired module, like the first Apple Vision Pro, which offloaded its battery. This solution would make it possible to considerably lighten the headset and reduce the heat emitted directly onto the user’s face.

Intense internal debates

Mark Gurman specifies that an internal debate is currently animating the teams around this structural choice. Some Apple executives would in fact prefer to keep an all-in-one model with no additional cable for the electronics, even if this path creates far greater engineering challenges for reducing weight. Incidentally, let us recall that Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus, who officially succeeded Tim Cook in September 2026, recently stated that he still sees a “bright future” for the Apple Vision Pro.
