The project will mark the franchise’s first feature film. It is obviously inspired by George R.R. Martin’s literary saga A Song of Ice and Fire, already the source of Game of Thrones and its various spin-offs. In other words, they’re taking the same ingredients, or almost, and starting over with what the series, at least in its early days, had done remarkably well.
Why? The answer is undoubtedly as weighty as it is costly. In Hollywood, imagination, audacity, and innovation seem more than ever to be in decline. In any case, and not at any price, the Game of Thrones machine is clearly not about to stop.
Blood and dragon tears on the big screen
Beau Willimon (Andor, House of Cards) wrote the screenplay for the film, while Owen Harris (Black Mirror, Mrs. Davis) will direct it. The story will take place before the events of House of the Dragon.
The story will follow the bloody and brutal conquest of Westeros by Aegon Targaryen, accompanied by his sisters and wives Rhaenys and Visenya. In just two years, he manages to unite six of the Seven Kingdoms, with only Dorne succeeding in resisting him.
What does George say about it?
The first information about the project emerged in 2024, when Mattson Tomlin, screenwriter of The Batman Part II, was still working on it in the form of a series. Warner Bros. finally announced its transformation into a feature film at CinemaCon earlier this year.
George R.R. Martin, for his part, had described the project as “an immense movie for the cinema, on the scale of Dune”.
