New Switch 2 with replaceable battery, coming soon?
24.03.2026 • 08h05
To comply with increasingly stringent European legislation, Nintendo may soon release a new version of its Switch 2 console.
According to the Japanese media outlet Nikkei, Nintendo intends to release a new Switch 2 console in Europe, which will feature removable batteries. This change, which will also affect the Joy-Con controllers, is in compliance with European regulations passed in 2023 and set to take effect in February 2027. The aim of these laws is to combat planned obsolescence in electronic devices and facilitate their repair. Thus, all portable electronic devices will be required to have replaceable batteries. It should be noted that while the Switch 2 meets this requirement, smartphones and tablets are (for now?) exempt from this obligation.
