New update for… the iPhone 5S

For once, Apple has released a software update for an iPhone that's over ten years old, so that its users can still enjoy it.
On January 26th, Apple released an iOS 12 update for devices still using the system, eight years after its release. iMessage and FaceTime updates for iPhone 5s and iPhone 6… Respect! This applies to the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6, released in 2013 and 2014 respectively. This might seem odd, even though the last update for this old OS dates back to January 2023, providing an opportunity to strengthen the security of these devices. This new update (iOS 12.5.8) extends the certificate for applications like iMessage and FaceTime, which would otherwise have stopped working in January 2027. Even though Apple guarantees a minimum of five years of security updates, we can applaud the initiative, which only concerns a handful of consumers who continue to use these models.
