While we thought the project was on hold, it seems that a connected ring is still in development at Apple, or at least still being considered.
Apple patent illustrated by a number of rings…££££
As proof, this patent recently granted to the manufacturer, describing a method of notification via a light strip around the ring. Named Electronic devices with edge lights, the document explains that the technology is applicable to all sorts of objects, including yoga mats and bags, but the majority of the illustrations are rings, leaving little doubt as to its primary use. To summarize, knowing that the ring does not have a screen, this thin light strip allows the ring to communicate visual information. The patent also mentions notifications by vibration, given that the user rarely has their eyes fixed on their fingers and therefore may miss the visual version. The latter is therefore preferred when the ring is not worn, the patent further explaining that the ring can detect whether it is worn or not.
