10 years of smartphones, Apple and Samsung dominate the market

A quick look at how smartphone production has evolved over the past ten years, with two brands literally dominating the market.

Based on Trendforce data, the VisualCapitalist website has illustrated the evolution of smartphone production between 2015 and 2025, by brand.

Smartphone market, Samsung/Apple duopoly££££

A simple glance shows that the market is almost in a state of duopoly, with Apple and Samsung reigning supreme. In addition, this past decade has seen the disappearance of some previously important manufacturers like Blackberry, LG and Nokia, who were unable to withstand the fierce competition.

Smartphone market 2024, Google completes the podium££££

Samsung remains the biggest seller, even though its annual production has fallen from 325 million units in 2015 to 226 million in 2024. Apple has a slower but opposite trajectory, which has gone from 215 to 222 million over the same period.

Google entered the market in 2016 with its Pixel range, and while the tech giant is now a distant third behind the leaders -10.5 million units produced in 2024- it nevertheless manages to stand out through the innovation and quality of its models.
