According to a report by Futuresource Consulting, the next international video compression standard to succeed H.266, likely to be called H.267, would arrive before the end of the decade, by 2028 or 2029.
H.267 codec to support Wi-Fi 8 and 6G££££
As a reminder, the current H.266 process was launched in 2020 and has not yet been widely adopted, in particular due to a lack of integration by broadcasters and manufacturers. H.267 would likely arrive alongside the new wireless communication formats [abc]Wi-Fi[/abc] 8 and 6G, normally coinciding with the maturity of the hardware and software ecosystems of extended reality (or XR, encompassing virtual and augmented reality).
