Samsung Q80C: QLED UHD 4K 120 Hz TV, Full LED Local Dimming, HDMI 2.1, 50'' to 98''

After the QD Oled Samsung Q95C and Samsung S90C series of QD Oled obedience, and the Samsung QN900C and Samsung QN800C Mini LED TV series, a look back at the Samsung TV 2023 range with a spotlight on the Samsung Q80C, at occasion of the announcement of the monstrous model Samsung TQ98Q80C (98'', 249 cm).

The Q80C Ultra HD 4K QLED TV series has six references, the Samsung QE50Q80C (50'', 127 cm), Samsung QE55Q80C (55'', 140 cm), Samsung QE65Q80C (65'', 165 cm), Samsung QE75Q80C (75'', 191 cm), Samsung QE85Q80C (85'', 216 cm) and the Samsung QE98Q80C (98'', 249 cm).

Samsung Q80C, Full LED Local Dimming Backlight System

Before going further in the presentation of these televisions, know that the Q80C screens have a Full LED Local Dimming system.

The design of the 2023 vintage, called AirSlim, remains very similar to that of 2022. Very successful, it still offers a central leg made of a sheet of metal with a thickness of 4 mm, for a great elegance of the 'together. Note that the TV is thicker than for those from other series (46.3 mm), due to the Full LED Local Dimming backlight system.

Of course, there is no One Connect box on Samsung Q80C TVs, the connection is available directly on the TV, at the back (see photo above).

Samsung Q80C, main specs

In terms of specifications, the Samsung Q80C Ultra HD 4K QLED TVs incorporate a native 10-bit, 100 Hz LCD panel (except on the 50'' equipped with a 50 Hz panel). They also benefit from the Quantum Processor 4K processor which mixes Machine Learning and Deep Learning processes for a total of 20 artificial intelligence modules (compared to 64 on the QN800C/QN900C Mini LED TV series) at work for image quality further improved.

As a reminder, the Deep Learning process is based on a neural model, i.e. without human intervention (unlike Machine Learning) in the learning of the processor. This decides on its own on the necessary changes to the image processing algorithms to regain optimum quality starting from a degraded display.

Another improvement is the EyeComfort Mode function which, once the television is connected to the Internet, subtly modifies the brightness and color temperature of the image according to the time of day, for optimal viewing comfort at all times. The latter, for example, reduces the blue light emitted in the evening to help sensitive people sleep.

Samsung Q80C, HDR and LCD panel coating

Q80C displays support HDR10, HDR10+, HDR10+ Adaptive/HDFR10+ Gaming and HDR HLG. All associated with the Filmmaker mode. And if they do not benefit from the coating with an extremely low reflectance index (reflections are almost non-existent), they do benefit from an enlarged viewing angle via Wide Viewing Angle technology.

Samsung Q80C, Adaptive Sound+, AVA, OTS and Dolby Atmos

The sound section is also featured on the Samsung Q80C TVs. The first concerns the OTS Lite process. This has a total of four speakers placed at the back of the screen (2.2 system) for a total power output of 40 watts. Good news, compatibility of Dolby Atmos tracks, up to wireless with a Samsung soundbar, is required.

For the rest, we find the Q-Symphony 3.0 function. The latter consists, in the presence of a connected Samsung Q-Series 2020/2021/2022/2023 soundbar, in taking advantage of the television speakers in addition to those of the soundbar to magnify the sound reproduction, its breadth and its spatialization.

The Adaptive Sound+ function, an evolution of the Adaptive Sound still capable of adapting the audio settings of the TV in real time according to the image displayed, now takes the listening room into account. Otherwise, the AVA (Active Voice Amplifier) function is still required, intended to cover new noise in the TV environment, automatically. For example that of a kettle or a vacuum cleaner which will be covered by an increase in volume managed directly by the TV. Don't panic, the TV lowers the sound, automatically always, when the noise stops.

Samsung Q80C, Multiview function

Of course, the Samsung Q80C 4K Ultra HD QLED TVs offer the simultaneous display of up to two contents with the MultiView function through as many windows on the screen: the first with the signal from a TV channel or a source connected to the TV, the second with the screen of the user's smartphone or the internet.

Samsung Q80C, Gaming Hub and HDMI 2.1 connectors

Also present, the Game Bar 3.0, the 16/9, 21/9 or even 32/9 (Super Ultra Wide Game View) display modes, the Mini Map Zoom function and the Gaming Hub (see our news Smart TV Samsung 2022 dematerializes PCs and consoles) for video game enthusiasts. Good point, the HDMI 2.1 standard is required with VRR, Freesync Premium Pro, ALLM, HFR 4K/120 and eARC compatibility on the four inputs. And to activate the Mirroring mode between a Samsung Galaxy smartphone and a Samsung Q80C TV, all you have to do, thanks to the Tap View function, is to touch the second with the first and you're done.

Samsung Q80C, Amazon Alexa, Bixby, Google Assistant and new Tizen

In 2023, the Tizen 7.0 interface remains very close to that of last year. It always gives pride of place to content, and now all Internet service providers have an IP TV application allowing you to enjoy it directly from a Samsung Smart TV, thus eliminating the need for a TV decoder. (see our Samsung Smart TV 2018 to 2022 news, focus on dematerialized TV boxes).

The Bixby voice assistant is still available, as are Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. And it is possible to easily switch from one to the other via the menu. Likewise, the Samsung-Q80C series is compatible with the AV1 codec. On the connectivity menu, we must mention the Wi-Fi 5 function, Bluetooth 5.2 and AirPlay 2 compatibility plus many communication features (Google Meet For example for video calls) or the possibility of working on these Microsoft documents via the Cloud on the TV screen.

There are also 16/9, 21/9 or even 32/9 display modes for video game enthusiasts with the connection of a PC and the Game Motion Plus mode. As a reminder, the latter (adapted to video games as its name suggests) is very interesting since it allows you to activate the motion compensation process of the TV with games while maintaining a fairly low Input Lag. Without forgetting the new remote control still solar but also capable of being recharged by RF (radiofrequency). Thus, the zappette takes advantage of your box's Wi-Fi to recharge constantly.

2

Of course, the SmartThings feature is still there. The group's IoT (Internet of Things) platform is compatible with Android and iOS and with several hundred devices from other brands (Arlo-type surveillance cameras, Amazon Echo or Google Home-type smart speakers, Philips Hue-type connected lights, connected lock…). Samsung Smart TVs are thus able to fit into the most modern interactive ecosystems with a major advantage, directly linked to their DNA, the possibility of displaying a great deal of information on their screen: the face of the person who has just rung at the front door, the contents of the Samsung Family Hub refrigerator, notifications from the robot vacuum cleaner or even from the washing machine when the cleaning or washing cycle is finished. The television thus becomes the preferred interface for accessing the functionalities offered by Smart Home equipment.
