PS VR2 headset: lackluster launch

Recently released, the PS VR2 virtual reality headset for PlayStation 5 got off to a slower start than expected.

According to figures from IDC quoted by Bloomberg, the PS VR2 virtual reality headset for PlayStation 5 sold 270,000 copies between its launch -February 22, 2023- and the end of March.

Sony PS VR2 disappointing launch in tough economic times

A disappointing figure, knowing that last year Sony aimed to produce 2 million units just for the launch period. A figure supposedly recently revised downwards due to a lower number of reservations than expected. Reasons given for this relative failure: increase in the cost of living, rising interest rates, layoffs on the upward slope, in short, a multitude of exogenous elements which slow down consumer purchases in all directions, and therefore also players, who more is for a material considered by many as an accessory. Certainly a great accessory, but an accessory all the same as it is true that enjoying PS5 is possible without PS VR2.

The word to Hiroki Totoki, CFO of Sony

During a recent Morgan Stanley conference, however, Sony's CFO -Hiroki Totoki- was confident that the PS VR2 could eventually exceed sales of the first PSVR which stopped at 5 million units. Optimistic, even if it started badly. "I think that a price drop for the PS VR2 will be necessary in order to avoid a complete disaster for this new product", according to Francisco Jeronimo of the market research and analysis firm IDC.
