Triangle Magellan 40th speakers, French audio craftsmanship

The French loudspeaker manufacturer Triangle, based on the outskirts of the city of Soissons, continued to surf in 2022 on its fortieth anniversary in the most beautiful way with a completely revised Magellan series, twenty years after the marketing of the first of the name. The latter is aimed at both Hi-Fi and Home Cinema enthusiasts and is a perfect illustration of French craftsmanship excellence.

In just over forty years of sometimes eventful existence, the brand was born in 1980, Triangle has always favored quality. Some of his references have also been successful, both in France and internationally, and are still widely appreciated (a member of the editorial staff still benefits from his Lyrr).

Columns Quatuor 40th and Cello 40th, Duetto 40th bookcase and central Voce 40th

Within Triangle production, Magellan loudspeakers occupy a special place. Flagship of the brand, they have always inaugurated the main technological advances of the brand, then declined on the different ranges of the French manufacturer. The Magellan 40th series is no exception to the rule with a major overhaul of its fundamentals, in substance and form. Four bass-reflex references are on the program, the two Quator 40th and Cello 40th columns, the Duetto 40th library and the Voce 40th central unit.

Magellan Triangle 40th, cabinetry modeled in 3D

In terms of innovations offered by the Triangle Magellan loudspeakers, a new design with a superb cabinetwork all in curved lines, covered with precious wood and several layers of lacquered piano-style varnish, developed with total inertia in mind. The plywood cabinets are structured from multiple 3mm thick high density layers. Formed under stress for three weeks, the rounded sides, eliminating any parallelism of the internal walls, prevent standing waves. And the reinforcements present within the structure, placed at strategic locations defined by measurements by accelerometers with laser sensors, offer extreme rigidity. Thus, almost all the vibrations likely to color the sound rendering have disappeared.

Magellan Triangle 40th, two new TZ2900PM-MG 25mm tweeters onboard

Also innovative is the TZ2900PM-MG 29 mm magnesium dome tweeter (see left below), the result of five years of research and development. Displaying a remarkable stiffness/weight ratio, it brings significant progress in terms of linearity and stability. Computer modeled, the horn strongly limits the off-axis diffusion of high frequencies. Associated with the phasing part, the latter offers a remarkably linear frequency response.

Namely, the Triangle Magellan Quatuor 40th reference is the only one in the series to have a rear tweeter, perfectly in line with the front one, allowing the speaker to radiate both front and rear from the point of emission, like an orchestra. The sound volume is thus better distributed, which simplifies the placement of the loudspeaker in the listening room. And above all, even if the loudspeaker is placed close to a wall, which has the effect of reinforcing the low frequencies, the tonal balance is thus preserved.

Magellan Triangle 40th, LHS2 heatsink on midrange and woofer

The 16 cm T16GM F100 midrange (see middle above) with paper cone (new cone) and the 16 cm woofer (see right above) with paper cone (12 cm midbass on the Duetto and medium-bass 7.2 cm on the Voce) of the SVA type (Sandwich Glass Honeycomb cone) are known. We find the LHS2 heat dissipation system. The latter is based on an injected aluminum basket whose rear part acts as a cooling hood. Thus, the temperature remains controlled for always optimal performance of the loudspeaker.

Triangle Magellan 40th, components signed SCR Audio and Audioquest cables

Equally major, the other developments remain invisible to the eye. For example, the Magellan 40th loudspeaker crossover components, fully assembled in the Soissons production unit (see photo below), are premium specimens (French MKP capacitors developed in collaboration with SCR Audio). Likewise, the cabling was developed with the American specialist Audioquest: single strand (mixture of long-grain copper and high-purity perfect-surface copper) with double insulation. A word about the aluminum terminal blocks allowing bi-wiring or bi-amplification, cut in the mass, equipped with connection terminals in copper.
