iPhone with retractable screen to hide the notch

Apple is exploring all possible ideas to maximize the occupancy rate of the screen on the front of the iPhone.

Some Android devices are already starting to integrate the selfie sensor under the screen, a technology that is still young and perfectible, but which allows a completely immaculate screen. For its part, Apple is also trying to achieve the same result, but the number of sensors used by its TrueDepth system makes the task difficult. The company is therefore exploring all possible options.

Rollable iPhone screen

A patent filed in May 2020 by Apple and recently published describes a method to hide the famous notch necessary to accommodate the sensors of the selfie module. In short, the screen can be rolled up to extend over a short portion, long enough (a few millimeters) to hide the notch.

Fallback solution?

The front sensors only reveal themselves when they are needed. A rather elegant solution that could see the light of day in the years to come if Apple fails to achieve a sufficient level of quality with sensors hidden under the screen. Source: Patently Apple
