Samsung QN90B, 43'', 50'', 55'', 65'', 75'', 85'' and 98'' Neo QLED Ultra HD 4K Mini LED TV

After our news on the Ultra HD 8K series with the Samsung QN700B, Samsung QN800B and Samsung QN900B and the UHD 4K Samsung QN95B series, the AVCesar.com editorial staff invites you to discover more about the Samsung QN90B unveiled at the CES show in Las Vegas last January, one of the widest of the brand's 2022 lineup.

Contrary to the QLED Ultra HD 4K QN90A TV series from 2021, only available in three screen sizes, the Samsung QN90B has many different diagonals, seven in total: Samsung QE43QN90B (43'', 109 cm), Samsung QE50QN90B (50'', 127 cm) Samsung QE55QN90B (55'', 140 cm), Samsung QE65QN90B (65'', 165 cm), Samsung QE75QN90B (75'', 191 cm), Samsung QE85QN90B (85'', 216 cm) ) and Samsung QE98QN90B (98'', 249cm).

Samsung QN90B, focus on design

The design is one of the key developments of the QN90B series for 2022, particularly in terms of the foot, which is still made of a sheet of metal 4 millimeters thick. The latter is here wider for a perfect anchoring on its support. For the rest, if the frame of the panel remains very thin, its thickness is greater than that of the QN95B, QN700B, QN800B and of course QN900B TVs. However, it remains discreet and quickly goes unnoticed at a viewing distance of 2/3 meters.

We also note the disappearance of the One Connect box, on Samsung QN90B TVs, the connectors are on board the TV, at the back.

Furthermore, apart from the near absence of edges, the Samsung QN90Bs are also extremely thin, not as thin as the brand's 8K UHD TV series, but at just 27mm across its entire surface, it's still remarkable . And like their predecessors, the QN90B TVs are perfectly straight.

Samsung QN90B, main specs

In terms of specifications, the Samsung QN90B 4K Ultra HD QLED TVs incorporate a native 10-bit, 100 Hz LCD panel with a PQI 4600 fluidity index (PQI 4500 on the 43''/50'' models). They also benefit from the Neo Quantum Processor 4K processor popular on last year's QN95A TVs. This mixes Machine Learning process and Deep Learning process and it has 16 Deep Learning modules (compared to 20 on the higher TV series) which are at work for an even better image quality.

As a reminder, the Deep Learning process is based on a neural model, i.e. without human intervention (unlike Machine Learning) in the learning of the processor. This decides on its own on the necessary changes to the image processing algorithms to regain optimum quality starting from a degraded display.

Another improvement is the EyeComfort Mode function which, once the television is connected to the Internet, subtly modifies the brightness and color temperature of the image according to the time of day, for optimal viewing comfort at all times. The latter, for example, reduces the blue light emitted in the evening to help sensitive people sleep.

Samsung QN90B, several thousand Mini LED

Regarding the quality of the blacks displayed on the screen, the new Mini LED backlighting system developed by the brand's engineers (see our CES 22 news > Samsung 2022 Neo QLED TV with Quantum Mini LED and Quantum Matrix) has several thousands of diodes and very many zones (around 10,000 diodes and 1,000 zones for the 85'') for a peak light of 2,000 nits (1,500 nits for the 43''/50'' specimens).

In addition to the switch to Mini LED technology, Samsung is also announcing better electrical management of each area of the backlighting system and optimized management of light leaks. As explained in our news on the Quantum Matrix process, this allows fine management of the quantity of current sent to each of the LEDs (Local Power Distribution) and internal upsampling of the gray scale to 14 bits (compared to 12 bits in 2021) to achieve vastly more accurate color grading and a noticeably wider displayed palette. It also allows in tone-on-tone images to reveal many additional details for richer textures and increased readability.

The end result offers an even more abysmal rendering of blacks and even brighter whites, on very small surfaces, for tenfold shine effects. Regarding light leaks, their perfect management has the effect of eliminating the Blooming phenomenon. These are more than interesting elements for an unprecedented HDR experience, knowing that the QN90B screens manage HDR10, HDR10+, HDR10+ Adaptive and HDR HLG.

Of course, the LCD panel and its QLC (Quantum Light Control) coating, with an extremely low reflectance index (reflections are almost non-existent) and a wide viewing angle via Ultra Viewing Angle technology Technology (inaugurated in 2019), is still in place in 2022. And it's a very good thing, its efficiency amazed us so much.

Samsung QN90B, Adaptive Sound+, AVA, OT+ and Dolby Atmos

The sound section is also featured on the Samsung QN90B TVs. The first concerns the OTS+ process. This has a total of eight speakers placed at the back of the screen (4.2.2 system) for a total power delivered of 60 W (2.2 and 40 W on the 50'' and 2.0 and 20 W on the 43'') but above all, compatibility of Dolby Atmos tracks.

For the rest, we find the Q-Symphony function. The latter consists, always, in the presence of a connected Samsung Q-Series 2020/2021/2022 soundbar, of taking advantage of the television speakers in addition to those of the soundbar to magnify the sound reproduction, its breadth and its spatialization.

Indeed, until now, when a soundbar is connected to a TV, the latter's speakers are then disconnected. With the Q-Symphony system signed Samsung, they remain active and largely contribute to the perceived audio improvement with a configuration up to 11.1.4 depending on the sound bar connected. And the demonstration we have witnessed truly demonstrates the effectiveness of the process and its relevance. Namely, if the soundbar is connected wirelessly to the television (via Wi-Fi), the management of Dolby Atmos soundtracks is of course also provided wirelessly.

The Adaptive Sound+ function, an evolution of the Adaptive Sound still capable of adapting the audio settings of the TV in real time according to the image displayed, now takes the listening room into account. Otherwise, the AVA (Active Voice Amplifier) function is still required, intended to cover new noise in the TV environment, automatically. For example that of a kettle or a vacuum cleaner which will be covered by an increase in volume managed directly by the TV. Don't panic, the TV lowers the sound, automatically always, when the noise stops.

Samsung QN90B, Multiview function

Another improvement, the Samsung QN90B Ultra HD 4K QLED TVs offer simultaneous on-screen display of two content with the MultiView function through as many windows: the first with the signal from a TV channel or source connected to TV; the second with the screen of the user's smartphone or from a game console, or even the Internet (see photo below). There are many display possibilities, from the classic PIP to displaying two adjacent windows.

Good point, the HDMI 2.1 standard is essential with VRR, Freesync Premium Pro, ALLM and HFR 4K/120 compatibility (and even 4K/144 for Samsung QE43QN90B and Samsung QE50QN90B televisions) to take advantage of certain PC graphics cards and eARC on all four inputs. And to activate the Mirroring mode between a Samsung Galaxy smartphone and a Samsung QN90B TV, all you have to do, thanks to the Tap View function, is to touch the second with the first, and you're done.

Samsung QN90B, Amazon Alexa, Birby, Google Assistant and new Tizen

In 2022, the Tizen interface is radically changing for ever more advanced ergonomics on the one hand, to give pride of place to content on the other. Namely, Samsung is currently working with Internet service providers to develop IP TV applications allowing you to enjoy it directly from a Smart TV and eliminate the need for a TV decoder. Thus, Orange TV would be accessible with a Login/mdp like myCanal for example.

2

The Bixby voice assistant is still available, as are Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. And it is possible to easily switch from one to the other via the menu. On the connectivity menu, we must mention the Wi-Fi 5 function, Bluetooth 5.2 and AirPlay 2 compatibility plus many communication features (Google Duo For example for video calls) or the possibility of working on these Microsoft documents via the Cloud on the TV screen.

3

There are also 21/9 or even 32/9 display modes for video game enthusiasts with the connection of a PC and the Game Motion Plus mode. As a reminder, the latter (adapted to video games as its name suggests) is very interesting since it allows you to activate the motion compensation process of the TV with games while maintaining a fairly low Input Lag. Not to mention the new Expert Calibration feature (see our CES 22 news > Neo QLED Samsung 2022 TV, Intelligent Calibration via Samsung Galaxy or iPhone) and a remote control that is still solar-powered but capable, in 2022, of being recharged by RF (radiofrequency). Thus, the zappette takes advantage of your box's Wi-Fi to recharge constantly.

4

Of course, the SmartThings feature is still there. The group's IoT (Internet of Things or Internet of Things) platform is compatible with Android and iOS and with several hundred devices from other brands (Arlo-type surveillance cameras, Amazon Echo or Google Home-type smart speakers, Philips Hue-type connected lights, connected lock…). Samsung Smart TVs are thus able to fit into the most modern interactive ecosystems with a major advantage, directly linked to their DNA, the possibility of displaying a great deal of information on their screen: the face of the person who has just rung at the front door, the contents of the Samsung Family Hub refrigerator, notifications from the robot vacuum cleaner or even from the washing machine when the cleaning or washing cycle is finished. The television thus becomes the preferred interface for accessing the functionalities offered by Smart Home equipment.
